Biography:

You could say I have been connected with patent law my whole life. Growing up in the Washington, DC, area, my dad was a patent lawyer for the government. After obtaining a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1984, I immediately began working as an Examiner in the organic chemicals group at the US Patent Office. In 1985, I started law school at night at George Mason University, which was beginning to develop an expertise in patent-related curriculum, and obtained my law degree in 1989. My 4 years as an Examiner were an invaluable experience in learning what makes an Examiner tick and how the USPTO operates. In 1988, I went into private practice and moved to MWZB in 1992. I have had a great deal of experience prosecuting applications in all chemistry-related fields and have particular experience working on organic chemistry (i.e., structures, reactions, properties and uses, in connection with, for example, pharmaceuticals, polymers and petrochemicals) and chemical engineering applications. I find great satisfaction in analyzing an application or a reference in depth to find the real heart of the invention or the reference in order to craft patent claims which will stand the test of time. Aside from work life, I enjoy keeping physically active, being a sports fan and competing in sports, particularly golf. My wife, Carol, is a travel agent and we enjoy experiencing new places and cultures and researching future trips. I also like to cook - chemistry that tastes good!
